and I am curious as to the purpose of that. I've seen it in other schematics as well.

Interesting. Not having seen it in datasheets before - I have never used it.

Perhaps its a manufacturer recommended component for some crystal oscillators? In any case, yet to have that happen :?

TYPICAL PIERCE PARALLEL RESONANT OSCILLATOR CIRCUIT
use crystal pins as in
oscillator_with_resistor.jpg to lower or stabilize your crystal and for what i quoted http://ww1.microchip.com/downloads/en/A ... 00838a.pdf

Interesting. I added that PDF to my data sheets collection, thank you. I noticed though that the title of that page referred to 16/17 series. Thanks as always be80be for clarifying. :D

Hi, Sorry its taken so long for me to work stuff out.
Frankly I think that USB is too advanced for hobby projects, its a much better idea to try RS-232 instead as Graham excelently shows us how to. If your computer dosen't have a serial port like mine then you should get a serial-usb converter http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=XC4834. Anyway, serial is also much easier to program with (works with VB.NET).
